A Letter to My Daughter on Her Birth

My sweet girl,

As I sat watching you sleep this evening, I brushed your soft, sweet cheek with my finger. I admired your perfect little ears, pursed lips, and tiny, perfect fingers and toes. My heart just filled with love for you. And fear.

I want so much to protect you from this world into which I brought you. I want to keep you safe from all harm. Unfortunately, that just isn’t possible. You will face heartbreaks, teasing, betrayals of various types. As much as I want to, I can’t keep those things away from you. But I will do my best to teach you to avoid what you can and how to pick up the pieces when you can’t. I’ll also be there to help you pick up the pieces and move on.

I love you more than words can say. I want you to know that. I will always love you, no matter what. I hope that you will always, always remember that. There will be times when you are mad at me, or I am mad at you, but I will always be your mother and you will always be my little girl. Never forget that.

There is so much I want and need to tell you. I thought I would write this letter to you, but perhaps I will make it a series of letters. There is too much for one letter.

Welcome to the family, little one. You have a big brother who is fascinated by you, a mommy who loves you, and a daddy who loves you. You also have lots of grandmas and grandpas who think you are the sweetest little girl ever. We are so excited that you are with us now, and we can’t wait to share the adventures of you growing up.

Love,

Mama
